LADY BLONDE @ THE MET BAR.

If there is no perceptible penetration, no probing, nothing remotely exciting, then what is the point? It's new angles, new depths, and a bit of give and take that really gets me going, that really hits the spot. Yes, good conversation matters almost as much as faultless looks. Doesn’t it?

A friend and I were enjoying Afternoon Tea (Afternoon De-Light to be precise) in the Met Bar at The Metropolitan, Park Lane. Having spent many evenings (and early mornings) in this ideally located, unfailingly cool, private members’ bar alongside sophisticated fellow-members and celebrities from the worlds of media, fashion and music, I was intrigued to see how the infamously late-night venue would lend itself as an afternoon destination. Plus I suspected it might be the answer to my friend’s common allergy complaint – cakes make her bottom swell.

The Met Bar – with fantastic cocktails, moody lighting, eclectic music and its legendary red leather booths that have caressed the behinds of the most illustrious party people (this week alone saw Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts, Jaime Winstone and Alfie Allen among others soak up the atmosphere, as well as a good proportion of the alcohol) – is a unique venue that doesn’t scream ‘Look at me, look at me’ but just offers a faultless, fun, exclusive hangout with no airs and graces – well there are a few; if it’s after 9pm and you’re not armed with a member or a room key, this is not the place for you.

But if you’re before watershed and you watch what you eat, this is the place for you, with food that’s as easy on the eye as it is on the waist. The Met Bar offers a modern twist to a British tradition; no bread sandwiches sit daintily but substantially in giant shot glasses, cupcakes are prettily decorated with colourful, low fat frosting, cute mini jams accompany low-gluten scones, and olive-oil muffins complete the waist-friendly but delicious feast. To top it all off, a choice of tantalising teas and renowned cocktails are on offer leaving you perfectly situated should you want your afternoon to roll into early evening.

I was enjoying a delicious breadless smoked salmon sandwich when my friend spotted an abnormally attractive man standing at the bar. “He’s mine!” She yelped through a mouthful of strawberries. He was holding an invitation in his hand. I squinted to see more: ‘99 Pink Balloons’ – it was an invite to a party, held in the Met Bar, the following night. He turned around, looked at us both and smiled at me. I turned back to my friend, “Afraid not,” I said. I knew amongst all the invitations on my mantelpiece, I had the same one.

As they have for over thirteen successful seasons, 15 designers showcase their collections in the hotel for London Fashion Week and to celebrate, the Met Bar throws a bi-annual LFW party.  On this occasion, the Met Bar and Lobby Lounge were transformed into a vintage circus where 300 of us were treated to a never-ending stream of cocktails, mini chorizo hot-dogs, tequila popcorn, candyfloss, toffee apples and a plethora of live performance acts.

The beautiful and the brilliant mingled in the electric setting that has born witness to many a dazzling occasion; and this one was no different.

I decided to leave the energetic crowd to seek out my prey. I ventured up to the 3rd floor where all the designers were displaying their clothes and accessories in bedrooms. I didn’t have to look for long; he was in the second bedroom I entered and was the only one there. He looked up. It was at this moment, I remembered that I was meant to be on a blind date organised by my mother. Oh well – I could do blind; I switched off the light. Conversation’s over-rated anyway.

Lady Blonde x

BEST BITS.

The cosseting service in the hotel and in the Met Bar ensures you are superbly looked after at all times.

Afternoon De-Light is perfect for special occasions and allows you to enjoy the most indulgent treats without suffering any guilt.

Situated on Park Lane, you are perfectly located for shopping and culture during the day, and by some of London’s best restaurants by night.

NEW OPENING.

BARTS.

Like an expanding Caribbean family, March sees Kitts nightclub acquire a sloaney sister in the form of speak-easy style Barts bar. Hidden behind an inconspicuous black door in a large 1930’s apartment building, Barts is every bit as exclusive as its namesake. While the food is reassuringly familiar the eccentric interior is made up of vintage wallpaper, Geppetto-style clocks and overflowing trunks of fancy dress costumes. Jukebox music and classic cocktails complete the picture. Oh and FYI, staff decide if you can enter or not, but become a regular and you will be granted a key card to this quirky den.
